Family Portraits
Until recently, the family portrait had changed little since Victorian times. Those stiff formal poses were born out of necessity because any movement during the long exposures would cause the resulting photograph to be blurred.
This set a totally unnecessary precedent for studio portraits for the rest of the twentieth century. Modern film was sensitive enough to capture and freeze movement and whilst the snapshot embraced this, the studio family portrait sitting remained embroiled in its formal roots.
Well now that has changed. We’ve stopped calling them “sittings” because sitting is not something you’ll do much of during your time at the studio. A studio photo shoot by Jayne and Chris Birchall is fun – and it shows in the pictures. We aim not to simply show what you look like – but to portray something of your personality. You will end up with a set of stunning images that will depict the very essence of your family.
